After the regular school year ends, a group of high school students in Omaha spends six weeks of summer exploring science, technology, engineering, agriculture and mathematics careers through Urban League of Nebraska’s Girls Summer STEAM Academy.

Thanks to a request submitted by Senior Solutions Engineer Mike Sander, the STEAM Academy received financial support from the TierPoint Gives Back program. Mike said he was drawn to STEAM Academy because as a father and an IT professional, he looks for ways to help his own daughters learn more about STEM careers.

The Omaha team shared Mike’s enthusiasm and decided to expand upon the company’s financial support by inviting the academy students and their camp leaders to their data center for a tour, lunch, and the opportunity to talk to employees about their career paths.

General Manager Jason Black, who led the data center tour, called the visit a valuable experience for both the students and the TierPoint team.

“We had the honor of meeting about 20 young women whose passion for science and technology was evident in the many questions they asked, and in the career opportunities we discussed,” said Jason. “We appreciate the opportunity to give back to the community, especially when it involves empowering young women in the field in which we make our living.”

The students also toured the TierPoint Help Desk operations center, led by Director of HDS Operations Michelle Parent. Several other employees volunteered to participate in the Q&A session.

“We felt it was important for the students to see and speak with women in technical roles during their visit, while still acknowledging that our industry has a long way to go in the area of diversity,” said Michelle. “Lending our support to programs like the Girls STEAM Academy is a good step in that direction.”

The Girls Summer STEAM Academy is a collaborative effort with Omaha Public Schools, community organizations and companies who provide their expertise to workshops and support through mentoring. Learn more at their official website.
