BraveIT Spotlight: Are You Proactively Monitoring Your Disaster Recovery Plan?

Disaster recovery and business continuity planning are vital components of any comprehensive business plan. And, as your business plans change to reflect adjustments in your business objectives and situation, your disaster recovery plan needs to change as well. This is especially true with businesses increasingly moving toward various combinations of clouds.

Gartner polled public cloud users and 81% of those users claimed they were working with more than two cloud providers/platforms.

What are your recovery objectives?

Having more than one cloud platform requires additional planning to ensure your systems are protected from disaster. As with any disaster recovery planning, you need to identify your business’s Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO). But in this case, you need to identify these for all of your cloud platforms. Our friends at TierPoint wrote a post to help you identify the questions you should ask when defining RTOs and RPOs for each of your workloads.

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) – how much downtime your business can withstand between the disruption and the restoration.

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) – the point in time from which you want your business recovered.

Estimating Your Disaster Recovery Requirements

Once you’ve determined your DR objectives and your methods for recovery, the next challenge is to determine your capacity requirements. As anyone who’s ever managed a data center before or tried to craft a disaster recovery plan knows, this can be a real challenge. Estimate incorrectly and you may find yourself short when it matters most.

Zerto’s Resource Planner can help you determine how much capacity you’ll need right away, and it continuously monitors and analyzes the required networking and storage resources to help ensure your disaster recovery plans keep up with your business.

To learn more about how Resource Planner works, we’ve posted an article with more details in our blog.
